A day at the beach, a.k.a. bunker, is not quite as pleasant in Scotland. In fact, many tour pros are quickly learning the bunkers at Royal Troon Golf Club are downright nasty.

Troon is a true links course presenting the toughest challenges: deep rough, firm greens, strong wind and colossal bunkers.

Don’t believe us? Take a look at 2016 U.S. Open Champion Dustin Johnson failing to clear the lip.

Smylie Kaufman was able to get out. However, by the size of that wall we can’t tell if he’s kneeling or standing…

Justin Thomas could only laugh at the situation he found himself in.

Ironically, the most famous and intimidating bunkers are found on the shortest hole. The eighth, known as the “postage stamp,” measures 123 yards and is surrounded by five cavernous bunkers.

Andrew “Beef” Johnson stood shoulder-deep in the, “wicked” Coffin Bunker during his practice round.

Even the great Beef couldn’t make it out in one shot.

However, no struggle compares to Rory McIlroy who made six attempts before getting his ball over the top edge.

The bunkers have become so famous they even have their own Twitter page.

It is no surprise golf was born in Scotland, this course is tough. The first two majors (Masters and U.S. Open) resulted in the highest tournament field stroke averages (74.4 & 73.5). With the bunkers covering this course, how will The Open compare?

Sound the bagpipes! We’re in for an exciting week.
